What Is a Windscreen Chip Repair?

A windscreen chip repair is a quick, non-invasive procedure that uses a specialist resin injected directly into the damaged area of your glass. Once cured using UV light, the resin bonds with the glass, restoring the structural integrity of your windscreen and significantly improving its appearance — all without the need for a full replacement.

Can My Chip Be Repaired?

Most chips can be repaired if they meet the following criteria:

• The chip is smaller than a 50p coin in diameter
• There are no more than three legs (cracks) extending from the chip
• The chip is not directly in the driver’s primary vision zone (zone A)
• The chip has not penetrated both layers of the glass laminate
• The damage is not near the edges of the windscreen

If your chip doesn’t meet these criteria, a full windscreen replacement may be required. Our technician will assess the damage honestly and give you the best advice — we’ll never push for a replacement if a repair will do the job.

Why You Shouldn’t Ignore a Windscreen Chip

A chip may look minor, but leaving it untreated is a risk you don’t want to take. Temperature changes, road vibrations, and even a minor knock can cause a chip to spread into a long crack within days — at which point a repair is no longer possible and a full replacement becomes necessary, at a significantly higher cost.

Beyond cost, a damaged windscreen compromises the structural integrity of your vehicle. In the event of a collision or rollover, the windscreen provides up to 30% of the vehicle’s structural strength — a weakened screen puts you and your passengers at greater risk.

Finally, driving with a chip in the driver’s vision zone is a legal offence and can result in an MOT failure. The sooner it’s repaired, the safer — and cheaper — it is.

• Resin injection — specialist resin is injected into the chip under controlled pressure

• Polishing — the surface is polished to restore optical clarity
