How Long Does a Windscreen Chip Repair
Take?

The Short Answer: Under 30 Minutes

In most cases, a professional windscreen chip repair takes between 20 and 30 minutes from start to finish. That includes assessment, preparation, resin injection, UV curing, and a final polish. Furthermore, once the repair is complete, you can drive away immediately — there is no waiting time required after a chip repair.

However, the exact time depends on several factors, including the size of the chip, its location on the windscreen, and the weather conditions at the time of repair. Consequently, it is worth understanding what is involved in the process so you know what to expect.

Good to know: Unlike a full windscreen replacement — which requires 30–60 minutes of drying time before you can drive — a chip repair allows you to get back on the road the moment the technician packs up.

The Chip Repair Process Step by Step

Understanding each stage of the repair helps explain why the total time falls in the 20–30 minute range. Here is what happens during a professional mobile chip repair:

1. Assessment (2–3 Minutes)

First, the technician inspects the chip to confirm it is repairable. They will check the size, depth, location, and the number of cracks radiating from the impact point. If the chip is in the driver’s direct line of sight or larger than a 50p coin, a repair may not be possible and a replacement would instead be recommended.

2. Cleaning and Preparation (3–5 Minutes)

Next, the damaged area is thoroughly cleaned. Any loose glass fragments are carefully removed, and the chip is dried to ensure no moisture is trapped inside. This step is critical — moisture inside the chip will prevent the resin from bonding properly and can result in a cloudy or failed repair.

3. Resin Injection (5–10 Minutes)

A specialist resin injector is attached over the chip. Using controlled pressure, the technician injects a professional-grade resin into the damaged area. The resin fills the void left by the chip and any cracks extending from it. This stage requires patience — the resin must penetrate every part of the damage to achieve the best possible result.

4. UV Curing (3–5 Minutes)

Once the resin has been fully injected, a UV lamp is used to cure it. The UV light triggers a chemical reaction in the resin that causes it to harden and bond permanently with the surrounding glass. In sunny conditions, this process can happen faster — however, in overcast weather a lamp is used to ensure consistent results regardless of the conditions.

5. Polishing and Final Check (2–3 Minutes)

Finally, the surface of the repair is polished to restore optical clarity and remove any excess resin. The technician will then check the result from multiple angles in different lighting conditions to confirm the repair is complete.

Does Weather Affect the Repair Time?

Yes — to some extent. Very cold temperatures can make the resin more viscous and slightly slower to work with. Moreover, rain or heavy moisture in the air means additional preparation time to dry the area thoroughly. In ideal conditions — a dry day above 5°C — the process is at its fastest.

However, our technicians carry specialist equipment to handle British weather conditions, so a repair can be carried out in most circumstances. In very heavy rain, we would typically advise waiting until conditions improve, or complete the repair in a covered area such as a garage or carport.

What About Larger or More Complex Damage?

A simple bullseye chip — the most common type — is the quickest to repair. Conversely, a star break with multiple cracks radiating outward takes slightly longer as each crack must be treated individually. In these cases the repair might take closer to 35–40 minutes. Similarly, a chip in an awkward location near the edge of the screen may require additional care.

Important: Do not pour hot water on a frosted windscreen with a chip. The sudden temperature change can cause the chip to spread rapidly into a crack, at which point repair is no longer possible and a full replacement becomes necessary.

Can You Fix It Any Faster?

Not without compromising the quality of the repair. The resin injection and curing stages cannot be rushed — insufficient injection time means the resin may not fully fill the damage, resulting in a less effective repair or visible cloudiness. Therefore, a thorough repair done correctly in 30 minutes is always preferable to a rushed job.

How Soon Should I Book a Repair?

As soon as possible. A chip left untreated will almost always get worse over time. Temperature changes, road vibrations, and minor impacts can all cause the chip to spread into a crack within days or even hours. Once a crack develops that is longer than 40mm, or runs into the driver’s line of sight, a repair is no longer an option and a full replacement — which costs considerably more — becomes necessary.

In short: the sooner you book, the quicker and cheaper the fix. Call us on 07860 541543 and in most cases we can be with you the same day or the following morning across Hertfordshire and surrounding areas.
