Windscreen Repair vs Replacement: What You Need to Know
Not every windscreen chip or crack requires a full replacement. As a general rule, if a chip is smaller than a 50p coin and is not in the driver’s direct line of sight, it can usually be repaired using a professional resin injection technique. Furthermore, in most cases the repair is virtually invisible afterwards and takes under 30 minutes to complete at your location.
However, cracks longer than 40mm, chips directly in the driver’s vision zone, or damage to the edges of the glass will typically require a full windscreen replacement. Our technician will therefore assess your damage honestly and recommend the most cost-effective solution — we will never push for a replacement if a repair will do the job safely.
Is a Chipped Windscreen an MOT Failure?
Yes — a chip or crack in the driver’s primary vision zone can result in an MOT failure. Moreover, even outside this zone, damage larger than 10mm in Zone A or 40mm elsewhere can fail. As a result, a chip repair is quick, affordable, and will ensure your vehicle passes its next MOT without issue.
Can I Drive with a Cracked Windscreen?
Legally, you may be committing an offence if your cracked windscreen obscures your vision. In addition, a cracked windscreen is structurally weaker — in the event of a collision, your screen provides up to 30% of the vehicle’s structural strength. Consequently, we strongly advise booking a repair or replacement as soon as possible.
